How to accept partial payment by Gift Card in Point of Sale

This article shows you how to redeem a gift card to pay a ticket in full or partially. You’ll learn how the POS handles different balance scenarios, how to use the Partial Redeem screen, and how tips are applied without breaking existing multi-tender logic.

1. Before You Start

• Ensure the Gift Card module is enabled and the card is active.
• Confirm you have network connectivity for balance checks.

2. Redeem a Gift Card (Full or Partial)

2.1 Full Payment (Balance ≥ Due)

1. On the Checkout screen, select Gift Card.
2. Scan or enter the card number.
3. The system checks the balance:
   • If balance ≥ ticket due, POS redeems the full due and completes payment automatically.
   • You’ll see the receipt/confirmation as usual.

2.2 Zero Balance

If the card balance is $0.00, the POS blocks payment and shows the message:

“Fail: The value to redeem exceeds the balance of the card!”

• Choose a different tender or another gift card.

2.3 Partial Redeem Flow

Use this when the balance is less than the ticket due.

1. Select Gift Card → Scan/enter card.
2. If you enter a redeem amount > Current Balance, the POS opens the Partial Redeem screen with:
   • Card Number
   • Current Balance
   • Redeem Amount input
   • Keypad
3. Enter a valid amount (the input cannot exceed Current Balance).
4. Tap OK/Confirm.
5. POS redeems the amount, updates:
   • New Balance on the card, and
   • Remaining Due on the ticket.
6. POS continues with the existing multi-tender flow for the remaining due (e.g., cash, card, other tenders).

2.4 Tip Priority & Limits

• The POS applies the entered gift card amount to the ticket first.
• If the gift card still has remaining balance, it will be used to cover Tip next (up to the remaining balance).
• Important rule: The sum of Amount + Tip never exceeds the Current Balance of the gift card.

3. FAQ

1) Why did I see “Fail: The value to redeem exceeds the balance of the card!”?
This appears when the gift card’s balance is $0.00 or your attempted redeem amount is higher than the current balance. Enter a smaller amount or use another tender.

2) I entered a larger amount and the Partial Redeem screen opened—what should I do?
Use the Partial Redeem screen to enter a valid amount that’s ≤ Current Balance, then Confirm.

3) How does the POS handle tips with gift cards?
The system applies your entered amount to the ticket first, then uses any remaining balance for Tip. It never lets Amount + Tip exceed the Current Balance.
