How to Use Pre/Post Modifiers POS?

Instructions:

The Pre/Post Modifiers feature enhances order customization by allowing staff and customers to easily modify items with clear, flexible options. Pre-modifiers add descriptive text before a modifier (e.g., “NO Sugar,” “EXTRA Ice”), while post-modifiers add text after a modifier (e.g., “Add Boba,” “Sauce ON SIDE”).

This update improves accuracy in order preparation, reduces mistakes, and enhances communication between front-of-house staff and the kitchen. It also allows for flexible pricing adjustments through fixed prices or multiplication factors.

With this feature, POS users can:

  • Create and manage groups of pre/post modifiers.
  • Assign these modifier groups to products or categories.
  • Select modifiers efficiently during sales with clear labels.
  • Automatically print clear instructions on kitchen tickets and customer receipts.

This guide explains how to create, configure, assign, and use Pre/Post Modifiers on the POS Dashboard and during sales. Follow step-by-step to fully apply this new feature.

  6. FAQ

1. What are Pre/Post Modifiers?

  • Pre-Modifiers (Prefix): Add text before the modifier (e.g. “NO Sugar”, “EXTRA Ice”).
  • Post-Modifiers (Suffix): Add text after the modifier (e.g. “Bacon ON SIDE”, “Add Jelly”).

These help customize orders clearly for both customer checks and kitchen tickets, reducing mistakes and improving order accuracy.

2. Create Pre/Post Modifier Groups

  • Open POS Dashboard > Products > PRE/POST MODIFIERS Tab.
  • Click the “+” button (bottom left sidebar) to create a new group.
  • Enter a Group Name (e.g., Ingredient Adjustments).
  • Save.

3. Create Pre/Post Modifiers inside Groups

For each group, create modifier options:

FieldDescription
OrderDisplay order of this modifier.
NameDisplay name of this modifer.
POS NameShort name shown to staff on POS screen.
Name to Prep-PrinterName as it will appear on the printed kitchen ticket.
Multiply Price?Check if you want price multiplication (e.g. double price for “EXTRA”).
PriceFixed price (if Multiply Price not selected).
Multiplication FactorIf Multiply Price is enabled, enter the factor (e.g. 2 for double).
Display ModeChoose Prefix (before) or Suffix (after).
Color & SizeCustomize button look for POS screen.
NoteExample: use factor 0 for NO modifier to remove charge.

Note: If you have a pre-modifier that should remove the price of the modifier it’s attached to (such as NO or LIGHT), make sure that the Multiply Price? setting is set to zero (0). For example, if a guest would like to exclude cheese from their sandwich, create a pre-modifier group that includes “NO” as an option. If cheeses are $2.99, selecting NO as the pre-modifier would multiply the $2.99 cost by zero, which would mean that the guest would not be paying money for cheese.
In the same way, you could increase the price of a modifier if you want to use “EXTRA” or “DOUBLE” as a pre-modifier option. If the Multiply Price? setting is set to two (2), it would double the price of a modifier when the EXTRA pre-modifier is selected. If the Pickles modifier costs $0, EXTRA Pickles would still cost $0. If the Cheese modifier costs $1, EXTRA Cheese would cost $2.

*Negative/Zero Multiplication Factor for Pre/Post Modifiers

  • Flexible Pricing for Modifiers: The system now allows a multiplication factor of less than or equal to 0 for pre/post modifiers when “Multiply Price” is selected.
  • This enables advanced pricing scenarios, such as using a “No” modifier to subtract the price of an item (e.g., “NO Topping” with a -1 multiplication factor resulting in a -$2 charge for a $2 topping).

4. Assign Pre/Post Modifier Groups to Items

  • Go to POS Dashboard > Products > CATEGORY/ITEMS Tab.
  • Select any item you want to configure.
  • On the right panel, locate section MODIFIER (Add-on).
  • In Pre/Post Modifier input, select one or more groups to assign.
  • Save.

5. Use Pre/Post Modifiers during Sales

  • On POS Sales screen, click Get Menu to refresh menu updates.
  • Start new order and select any item with assigned Pre/Post Modifier group.
  • You will see a row with “…” to indicate Pre/Post Modifiers.
  • Select a Pre/Post Modifier first (e.g. “Add”, “No”).
  • Then select a Modifier (e.g. “Cheese”).
  • POS will combine them (e.g. “Add Cheese”, “No Cheese”).
  • Selected Pre/Post Modifier will be highlighted while choosing the modifier.

Example Flow:

  • Select “NO” → Select “Cebo” → Result: No Cebo
  • Select “ON SIDE” → Select “Sauce” → Result: Sauce ON SIDE

6. FAQ

Q1: What’s the difference between Pre and Post Modifier?
A1:

  • Pre Modifier: prefix (before ingredient name)
  • Post Modifier: suffix (after ingredient name)

Q2: Can I assign multiple Pre/Post Modifier groups to one item?
A2: Yes. You can assign multiple groups depending on item needs.

Q3: What happens if I select Multiply Price with a factor?
A3: The price of the attached modifier will be multiplied by the factor. Example: Cheese $1, EXTRA Cheese (factor 2) = $2.
